Freshman, Sophomore & Junior Internship Guide for Summer 2027: Programs, Deadlines, and How to Get In

Updated: 6 days ago

Updated September 2026. Bookmark this page. We update it as programs open and close.

Most freshmen think internships start junior year. They don't.

Microsoft, Google, NVIDIA, Citadel, Jane Street, LinkedIn and dozens of other companies run programs built for first and second-year students. Many of them open in September and October. Some close in 2 weeks.

I spent years as an engineer at Amazon. Now I teach intro CS at Morgan State and support CodePath workshops there. And I see the same pattern every semester.

The students who land early internships usually aren't the smartest in the room. They're the ones who knew these programs existed. And they applied on time.

So I put everything in one place. This guide covers 150+ internships, insight events, fellowships, scholarships, research programs, part-time roles, and prep resources. Every program gets a real rundown: who it's for, what you actually do, when to apply, and what I'd tell you if you were sitting in my office hours.

This is not a page you read once. It's a page you come back to all year.

And when you're ready to apply, find live roles pulled straight from company hiring systems at hiring.fyjump.com. You'll see a "Find open roles" link under every program in this guide. Use it. New roles post every week.

1. How to Use This Guide

Every date in this guide is approximate. Companies move their windows every year. And the popular programs close early once they get enough applicants.

So treat these dates as a heads-up, not a promise. Always confirm on the company's page before you plan around it.

The same goes for pay. "Reported pay" means figures from recent cycles and public reports, not an official offer. Companies adjust pay every year. But it gives you a real sense of what these programs are worth.

And a quick tip: you can click any program in the table of contents to jump straight to it.

Here's the process I tell my students to follow:

  1. Pick 8–10 programs that match your year and your interests.

  2. Put every application window on your calendar today.

  3. Get 1 strong project on GitHub before the first window opens.

  4. Apply the week a program opens. Not the week it closes.

A lot of students apply to 200 random postings and hear nothing back. Then they decide they're not good enough. That's the wrong lesson.

Volume without a plan doesn't work. Focus on the right programs. Apply early.

→ Your first step: open hiring.fyjump.com in another tab. As you read, look up the companies on this list and see what they have open right now.

2. Summer 2027 Underclassmen Tech Internships

These are paid summer programs built for freshmen and sophomores. Most of them come with a mentor, a real project, and a lower technical bar than a standard software engineering internship.

They know you haven't taken algorithms yet. They're hiring for potential.

And here's the part most students miss. Companies run these programs to build their pipeline early. If you do well, you're first in line for the junior-year internship. And that internship is usually the path to a full-time offer.

Microsoft Explore

  • Who it's for: First and second-year students

  • Length: 12 weeks, summer

  • Where: Redmond, WA, with a second site in Atlanta

  • When to apply: September–October 2026. Microsoft doesn't always post a hard deadline, so apply early.

  • Reported pay: Around $8,000–$10,000 per month, plus a $5,000 signing bonus

  • 2027 status: Confirmed. Postings for this cycle have gone live (job IDs 1782349 and 1773452).

  • Link: Explore Microsoft

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Explore is probably the best-known underclassmen program in tech. And it pays like it.

It's rotational. You get time across the main phases of building a product: design, build, and quality. In practice that means you get a taste of both software engineering and program management before you have to pick a lane.

You work on a group project with other Explore interns. You also get mentorship, community events, and networking with people across the company.

The process has historically been a phone interview followed by a final round. Expect behavioral questions and beginner-friendly coding.

My take: that rotation is the hidden value. Most students don't know if they want SWE or PM until they've done both. Explore lets you find out on Microsoft's dime. Apply the first week it opens.

Google ASDI (formerly STEP)

  • Who it's for: First and second-year undergrads with a passion for CS

  • Length: 12 weeks, summer

  • Where: Multiple US offices

  • When to apply: Late September–October 2026. The window has been as short as 2–4 weeks.

  • Reported pay: Around $45–$50 per hour

  • Acceptance rate: Estimated between 1.5% and 5%

  • Link: Google ASDI

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

ASDI stands for Associate Software Developer Intern. If you've heard of Google STEP or the Engineering Practicum, this is the same program under a new name.

You're paired with a Google engineer as your host. Often you're also paired with a co-intern. Together you work on a real project, not a toy one.

The program puts a focus on students from groups historically underrepresented in tech. It includes technical training and professional development on top of the project work. Historically, the interviews have been 2 technical phone screens.

But here's the hard truth. ASDI is extremely competitive. The estimated acceptance rate sits between 1.5% and 5%, which is tighter than most top universities. And the application window is short. Miss it and you wait a full year.

So don't wait for the "perfect" resume. Get your 1 project and your coursework on the page, and submit the week it opens.

LinkedIn First Play

  • Who it's for: Students who have completed their first or second year of CS

  • Length: 12 weeks, summer, hybrid

  • When to apply: Late November 2026. The window has run about 2 weeks.

  • Pay: Paid (rate not published)

  • 2027 status: New program

  • Link: LinkedIn First Play

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

First Play is LinkedIn's newer underclassmen engineering internship. And it's built around the current moment.

LinkedIn frames it as a program for students building the foundational skills to become an "AI-native" builder. You get hands-on engineering work, mentorship, and room to grow early in college.

Because it's newer, fewer students know about it. That's your edge.

Set a calendar alert for early November right now. A 2-week window is easy to miss.

NVIDIA Ignite

  • Who it's for: Students who just started their first or second year, from historically underrepresented communities

  • Length: 12 weeks, summer

  • Where: Santa Clara, CA

  • When to apply: October 2026, with a window of about 2 weeks. Some past cycles listed January, so start checking in early October.

  • Reported pay: Around $23–$42 per hour, plus housing

  • Link: NVIDIA University Recruiting

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Ignite is NVIDIA's pre-internship program. You get immersed in the company's products, culture, and ecosystem for 12 weeks.

Here's the unique part. You get to choose your area of interest and interview with the team you'd actually join. That can be engineering, but also finance, HR, marketing, and more.

It's a great fit if you love hardware, software, and research. And given where AI is right now, NVIDIA on your resume as a sophomore carries real weight.

Check the page weekly starting in October. Don't rely on remembering.

Amazon Future Engineer

  • Who it's for: Students heading into college (freshman year) studying computer science

  • Length: Summer internship plus a multi-year scholarship

  • When to apply: November 2026

  • Award: Up to $40,000 in scholarships ($10,000 per year), plus a paid Amazon internship

  • 2027 status: Confirmed

  • Link: Amazon Future Engineer Scholarships

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

This one is a scholarship and an internship in one package.

Winners get up to $40,000 toward a CS degree, paid out at up to $10,000 per year. On top of that, you get the opportunity to complete a paid summer internship at Amazon.

I spent years at Amazon. An internship there early in college opens a lot of doors, and the brand carries weight with every recruiter after.

If you're a high school senior or incoming freshman reading this, this is one of the best deals on this entire page.

Amazon Propel

  • Who it's for: First and second-year students, with a focus on first-generation and underrepresented students

  • Length: About 12 weeks, summer

  • Where: Multiple US locations

  • When to apply: August–October 2026

  • Reported pay: Around $60 per hour

  • Link: Amazon Internships for Students

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Propel is Amazon's early-career internship for students who might not see themselves in a typical Big Tech intern class.

The goal is the same as the other underclassmen programs. Get you real experience at Amazon early, so you're ready for the standard SDE internship later.

Amazon posts a lot of student roles. Search their student page and filter by your year. And if you're first-gen, say so in your application. That's exactly who this program is looking for.

Capital One Early Internship Program

  • Who it's for: Early undergrads. Capital One has described it as designed for second-year students, and other sources say freshmen are welcome. Check eligibility for your year.

  • Length: About 10 weeks, summer

  • Where: McLean, VA; Plano, TX; and New York

  • When to apply: December 2026–January 2027 in recent cycles. Some cycles have opened in the fall, so check early.

  • Reported pay: Around $7,000–$12,000 per month

  • Link: Capital One Early Internship Program

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Capital One is one of the most underrated tech employers for students. It's a bank, but it runs like a tech company.

The Early Internship Program has a technology track. You get real-world experience plus tools to grow personally and professionally. And it's explicitly designed to prepare you for their future internships and full-time roles.

The interview is more approachable than Big Tech. Expect a behavioral screen plus a coding challenge that accounts for where you are in school.

And because the window sits later than Big Tech, it's a strong option if you miss the fall rush.

Citadel Launch

  • Who it's for: Sophomores aspiring to be engineers

  • Length: 11 weeks, summer

  • Where: New York City

  • When to apply: October–November 2026

  • Reported pay: $4,300–$4,800 per week

  • 2027 status: Confirmed

  • Link: Citadel Launch

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Launch is a paid engineering internship inside one of the biggest names in finance. You don't need a finance background. You need to want to build.

You work alongside experienced engineers on projects that affect Citadel, Citadel Securities, and global markets. You also get time to network with peers and even senior leaders.

At a reported $4,300–$4,800 per week, Launch is one of the highest-paying underclassmen programs out there.

The bar is high. But if you like hard problems and you're curious about how markets work, this is worth your best application of the year.

Two Sigma Freshman Software Engineer Internship

  • Who it's for: Freshman CS students

  • Length: About 10–12 weeks, summer

  • Where: New York City

  • When to apply: July–August 2026 in recent cycles. Older cycles ran into early December, so check now in case it's still open.

  • Reported pay: $10,000–$12,500 per month, plus free housing

  • Link: Two Sigma Internships

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

This is one of the rare internships built specifically for freshmen.

You work with Two Sigma engineers and other interns on real software projects. You get technical training and mentorship to help you ship professional-quality code.

Two Sigma is a quant firm, so the environment is data-heavy and engineering-driven. And free housing in NYC is worth thousands on its own.

Because it opens so early, most freshmen miss it entirely. Don't be most freshmen.

Jane Street Immersion Program (JSIP)

  • Who it's for: First and second-year students with software engineering aspirations who have faced barriers to opportunity in CS

  • Length: Multi-week, summer

  • Where: New York City

  • When to apply: Fall 2026

  • Link: Jane Street JSIP

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

JSIP is for students who love computer science but haven't had the same access as their peers. Think no CS in high school, no family in tech, or no network to lean on.

It's an intensive summer program. You build your programming skills in a collaborative, fast-paced setting that prepares you for a software engineering career.

Jane Street is one of the most selective employers in the world. JSIP is one of the most real doors in.

When you write your application, be honest about the barriers you've faced. That's not a weakness here. That's the point.

Palantir Accelerate (formerly Palantir Path)

  • Who it's for: Sophomores and juniors early in their journey as technologists

  • Length: About 10–12 weeks, summer

  • Where: New York City or Washington, DC

  • When to apply: August–October 2026

  • Reported pay: Around $60 per hour, plus a housing stipend

  • Link: Palantir Accelerate

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Accelerate replaced Palantir Path. Same idea, new name.

The goal is to bridge the gap between what you learn in class and what it takes to solve messy, real-world problems. Palantir especially encourages students from communities historically underrepresented in STEM.

If you see an old post telling you to apply to "Palantir Path," this is where you go now.

→ Quick break. If a program on this list closed before you found it, don't stress. New internships post every week on hiring.fyjump.com.

Duolingo Thrive

  • Who it's for: Second-year students from communities underrepresented in tech

  • Length: 8–10 weeks, summer (sources differ, so check the current posting)

  • Where: Pittsburgh, PA

  • When to apply: Late September–October 2026

  • Reported pay: $43–$45 per hour

  • Link: Duolingo Careers

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Thrive is an immersive summer program where you build your software engineering skills and see what it's like to work at Duolingo.

It's a smaller program at a company with a strong engineering culture. Smaller cohorts often mean more attention from mentors.

And Duolingo's product is something you've probably used. That makes for easy, genuine answers in the "why us" part of the interview.

UberSTAR

  • Who it's for: Undergrad freshmen and rising sophomores

  • Length: About 10–12 weeks, summer

  • Where: San Francisco or New York

  • When to apply: September–December 2026

  • Reported pay: Around $50–$55 per hour

  • Link: UberSTAR

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

STAR stands for Summer Technology cAreer Readiness. It's a paid internship for students at the very start of college.

Uber encourages students from all schools to apply. That includes students historically underrepresented in tech, like Black, Hispanic, and Native American students, students with disabilities, and veterans.

If you're at a school that doesn't usually get recruited, read that line again. They mean it.

JPMorganChase Fellowship Program

  • Who it's for: Sophomores, including (but not limited to) Black, Hispanic, and Latino students

  • Length: 5 weeks, full-time, paid

  • Where: Select JPMorganChase offices

  • When to apply: November 2026–January 2027

  • Pay: Paid (rate not published)

  • 2027 status: Confirmed

  • Link: JPMorganChase Fellowship

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

This fellowship gives you hands-on experience and a project-based curriculum inside one of the largest banks in the world.

There are technical tracks in Global Technology (Software Engineering) and Data Science.

It's shorter than most internships. But it's designed as a pathway to future JPMorganChase roles. That makes those 5 weeks count.

Salesforce Futureforce Tech Launchpad

  • Who it's for: Sophomores (sometimes described as rising juniors)

  • Length: 10 weeks, summer, paid

  • Where: Salesforce Tower, San Francisco

  • When to apply: October 2026–February 2027. Some cycles have run into April.

  • Pay: Paid (rate not published)

  • Link: Futureforce Tech Launchpad

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

This is a pre-internship program run by Salesforce and powered by CodePath.

You learn full-stack web development and engineering soft skills. You get 1:1 mentorship. And you build capstone projects around web development and design fundamentals.

I support CodePath workshops at Morgan State, so I've seen how they teach. The structure is strong, and it's built for students who haven't had a big-name internship yet.

The goal is simple. Walk out internship-ready.

Bank of America Global Technology Summer Analyst (Freshman & Sophomore)

  • Who it's for: Freshmen and sophomores interested in technology

  • Length: About 10 weeks, summer

  • Where: Charlotte or New York

  • When to apply: September–November 2026, with some tracks into early December

  • Reported pay: Around $58–$65 per hour

  • Link: Bank of America Global Technology Programs

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Bank of America's Global Technology & Operations group runs the systems behind consumer banking, payments, lending, wealth management, and trading.

That's a massive amount of technology. And they run early summer analyst programs for underclassmen who want in.

Big banks don't get the hype that Big Tech does. But they hire a lot of engineers, pay well, and convert interns at strong rates.

→ Banks, fintech companies, and Big Tech all hire interns. See who's hiring right now on hiring.fyjump.com.

Wells Fargo Sophomore Experience

This used to be called the Sophomore Discovery Fellowship Program.

It's a competitive program built around a series of virtual experiences. You get business exposure plus structured assessments. And it's designed as a pathway into Wells Fargo's early-career internships across different lines of business.

Treat the assessments like interviews. Because they are.

HRT Women in Trading & Technology Internship (WiTTI)

  • Who it's for: Second-year students from backgrounds underrepresented in tech and finance. HRT's women-focused programs have been open to women and non-binary students.

  • Length: 2–4 weeks in January

  • Where: New York City

  • When to apply: Fall 2026, around November

  • Reported pay: $4,800 per week, plus housing

  • Link: HRT Student Opportunities

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Hudson River Trading is an algorithmic trading firm. WiTTI is their January exploration program.

You get an introduction to every technical side of the algorithmic trading industry. You learn who HRT is and what they do. And you work on hands-on independent projects in Python and C++.

Because it runs in January, it doesn't compete with a summer internship. You can do both.

Bridgewater Rising Fellows

  • Who it's for: Sophomores

  • Length: About 3–8 weeks, summer

  • Where: Westport, CT, with housing included

  • When to apply: December 2026–January 2027

  • Reported pay: $51,000–$71,000 on an 8-week basis, plus housing

  • 2027 status: Confirmed

  • Link: Bridgewater Students

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Bridgewater is one of the largest hedge funds in the world. Rising Fellows is their early program for sophomores.

It opens later than most. So if you struck out in the fall, add this to your list.

Dropbox Emerging Talent (formerly Dropbox Launch)

  • Who it's for: Sophomores

  • Length: About 12 weeks, summer

  • Where: Remote

  • When to apply: December 2026

  • Reported pay: $8,000–$9,500 per month

  • Link: Dropbox Emerging Talent

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Dropbox has run an immersive 12-week experience for early students, historically under the name Dropbox Launch.

The big draw: it's remote. If you can't relocate for the summer, this matters.

Check their emerging talent page for the current program name and requirements. It has changed over the years.

EA Pathfinder

  • Who it's for: STEM freshmen and sophomores from underrepresented backgrounds

  • Length: About 12 weeks, summer

  • Where: Redwood City, CA

  • When to apply: Fall 2026

  • Pay: Paid (rate not published)

  • Link: EA Pathfinder

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

If you got into CS because of games, look at this one.

Pathfinder gives you early, real-world experience in technical fields at Electronic Arts. The goal is for students to show their work and learn in a strong tech environment.

Talk about the games you play and the ones you've tried to build. That passion is a real asset in this application.

Ramp Software Engineering Intern

  • Who it's for: First and second-year students

  • Length: About 10 weeks, summer

  • Where: New York City

  • When to apply: Fall 2026

  • Reported pay: Around $67.50 per hour

  • Link: Ramp Emerging Talent

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Ramp is a fast-growing fintech startup. And it's one of the few high-growth startups that openly recruits underclassmen.

Startups give you more ownership than a big company. You ship faster. You see the impact of your code.

If you want to know what startup engineering actually feels like, this is a strong place to find out.

Visa Sophomore Internship Program

  • Who it's for: Current sophomores from underrepresented communities

  • Link: Visa Careers

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

This is a hands-on, immersive program to help sophomores build a foundation in technology.

You get to know Visa's products, people, and culture. And payments is a massive tech space that most students overlook.

Search "Sophomore" on their careers page. Postings don't always stay up long.

Oracle First Year SWE Internships

  • Who it's for: Students who have completed their first year in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field

  • Length: Summer

  • When to apply: Fall 2026

  • Link: Oracle Internships

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Oracle posts software engineering internships specifically for first-year students.

This is a big, established tech company. Fewer students think of it for early internships. That means less competition for you.

Zillow Engineering and Leadership Program (ZEAL)

ZEAL is Zillow's early engineering and leadership program for sophomores.

Details change year to year, so check the internships page in the fall. But it's a well-known consumer tech product, and an early program there is a strong line on your resume.

Activision Blizzard King Sparx Internship

Sparx is Activision Blizzard King's early internship. It's designed to spark career interests and set students up for success in the gaming industry.

It launched a few years ago. Confirm it's still running for 2027 on their early careers page before you plan around it.

New Technologists

This is a 7-week innovation academy. You learn the product lifecycle and build a prototype solution for the modern customer.

You get real-world app development experience with hands-on training from senior staff at Microsoft. Participants have been given hardware and software, plus an $8,000 stipend.

The February window makes it a solid backup if your fall applications don't land.

→ Some of these programs fill fast. See which internships are live right now on hiring.fyjump.com.

3. Internship Alternatives

Didn't land a traditional internship? That's normal. Most freshmen and sophomores don't.

But doing nothing all summer is a mistake. These programs give you real experience, real code, and something real to talk about in your next interview.

MLH Fellowship

  • Who it's for: Aspiring software engineers at any year

  • Length: 12 weeks

  • Where: Remote

  • When to apply: Rolling, with cohorts in winter, spring, and fall

  • Pay: Stipend available

  • 2027 status: Confirmed

  • Link: MLH Fellowship

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

The MLH Fellowship is a 12-week internship alternative run by Major League Hacking.

Instead of interning at 1 company, you contribute to open source projects that companies everywhere depend on. It's collaborative, remote, and guided by expert mentors. There are different tracks, including Open Source. A stipend is available.

The process has included an application review, a 10-minute behavioral interview, and a 15-minute technical interview.

Recruiters recognize MLH. And open source contributions show you can work in someone else's codebase. That's half the job.

Google Summer of Code

  • Who it's for: Students and new contributors to open source

  • Length: About 10 weeks

  • Where: Remote

  • When to apply: Around April 2027

  • Link: Google Summer of Code

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

Google Summer of Code brings new developers into open source.

Here's how it works. You pick open source organizations you want to work with. You contact their mentors and write a project proposal. If you're accepted, you spend a few weeks getting to know the community, then about 10 weeks coding toward goals you agree on with your mentor.

The proposal is the whole game. Start talking to the organization before you write it. Show them you've read their code.

Outreachy

  • Who it's for: People from groups underrepresented in tech

  • Length: Internship cohorts, paid

  • Where: Remote

  • When to apply: Check the applicant guide for current rounds

IBM Accelerate is a virtual learning program with live weekly sessions over 8 weeks during the summer.

You build skills alongside IBM employees. And you earn an industry-recognized badge you can add to LinkedIn and your resume.

→ You can do an alternative program and still chase a traditional internship. Browse open internships on hiring.fyjump.com.

4. Tech and Quant Insight Events

These are short programs, usually 1–5 days. They're not internships.

But don't skip them. They put you in a room with engineers and recruiters. Many are fully paid for. And a lot of them lead straight into internship interviews.

A student who attended an insight event has a name, a story, and a contact. A cold applicant has none of those.

Jane Street First-Year Trading & Technology Program (FTTP)

  • Who it's for: First-year undergrads

  • Length: A few days

  • When to apply: July–August. The 2026 window has likely passed. If you're a high school senior, set a reminder for July 2027.

  • Link: Jane Street FTTP

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com

A small group of first-years spends a few days learning Jane Street's trading and technology models.

You take classes. Then you play a team-based mock trading simulation.

It opens in the summer before most freshmen are even thinking about recruiting. That's why it matters.

Jane Street FOCUS

  • Who it's for: First-year students who have faced barriers to advanced STEM education

  • Length: Multi-day

  • When to apply: Check Jane Street's programs page

  • Link: Jane Street FOCUS

  • Find open roles: hiring.fyjump.com
